Message from the Program Director

As the Program Director of the University of Southern California/Los Angeles General Medical Center Pathology Residency Training Program, I am delighted to welcome all visitors, potential candidates, residents, and alumni to our resident-run website.

Our mission statement is to provide residents and fellows with strong and diverse clinical, laboratory and research exposure through didactics and service work, preparing them for their future practices in the community or academic setting. Pathology is a quickly evolving field with an infinite possibility of career path interpretations, so it is important that our training program continually evaluates, adjusts, and envisions how to create a platform in which our mission is accomplished. I am very proud of the residents, faculty, and staff in our program as we work together to create the safe supportive environment that provides each resident with challenges, experience, and exposures that will help them grow towards their greatest potential.

Our fully-accredited training program is structured to prepare residents for academic or community practice. We offer combined (4 year) training in anatomical and clinical pathology (AP/CP-4), anatomical and neuropathology (AP/NP-4), and focused (3 year) training in anatomic pathology (AP-3). In keeping with the basic philosophy of the department, programs can be tailored to meet specific career objectives of the resident. We now also offer a physician-scientist track which provides dedicated time for research during the clinical training years, followed by an additional year of investigative research.

Senior residents may apply for a departmentally-approved research year. AP and CP disciplines are integrated over the required four years. Our laboratories process over 7 million laboratory examinations annually, including 146,000 anatomic pathology specimen tests.

The Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine supports 24 post-graduate physician residency positions (6 per year) and up to 19 post-residency fellowship positions.

AP and CP rotations are integrated throughout the 4 years of training at various institutions including Los Angeles General Medical Center, Keck Medical Center of USC, Children’s Hospital Los Angeles, and Los Angeles County Department of Medical Examiner. Through training at our affiliated institutions with diverse patient populations, our residents gain valuable experience diagnosing a full range of pathology.

Research is strongly encouraged with numerous available research projects in various fields. Medical student teaching is also encouraged at Keck School of Medicine of the University of Southern California.
